gina young (she/they) is an award-winning writer, director, songwriter and performer whose work blurs genres and forms. her plays, musicals, videos, and curated events have been presented everywhere from The Hammer Museum and REDCAT to punk clubs and gay bars across the US and Europe.
interlacing music, movement and text in increasingly new ways, gina queers content and form, bringing audiences together for intimate and transcendent experiences. she is the creator of SORORITY and Feminist Acting Class.
I WRITE AND DIRECT
I've been writing and directing experimental plays and musicals since dropping out of Tisch circa Y2K. I am a winner of the Humanitas/PLA LA Prize, The Jane Chambers Award for Playwriting and a two-time Finalist for Center Theatre Group's Sherwood Award for boundary-pushing theatre artists. My focus is on generative and partially-devised work, but I also take on freelance writing and directing projects that feel particularly vital and exciting.
I founded Feminist Acting Class in 2016 as a radical experiment in actor training, focused on dismantling institutionalized sexism and envisioning how we might expand the possibilities for women, trans and nonbinary actors on stage and screen. FAC has been presented at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Conference and Directors Lab West. I love facilitating paradigm shifts and imagining a world without bias in actor training.
I CURATE PERFORMANCE
Concerts, cabarets, plays, salons, club nights... Active in the lesbian + queer scene for over 20 years, I've produced events everywhere from punk clubs and gay bars to some of the most esteemed stages, and consider creating queer community central to my life's work. I currently curate live digital salons under the name SORORITY, which started as a Los Angeles cult fave that appeared at venues including the Hammer Museum and Barnsdall Gallery Theatre.
i spent most of the 2000s touring as a singer/songwriter, first as a solo punk/folksinger under my own name, then later with a performance art pop project called TEAM GINA.
the songs i wrote and performed between 2001-2010 are available on your favorite streaming site. many of these songs were part of my early musicals, including she cuts herself/she likes to write and phone|sex|cancer. my song Supergirl appeared on Dawson's Creek (season 6 episode 8, "Spiderwebs."), and my song So-Called Str8 Grrrl has gone viral on TikTok and Spotify.
you can download or stream these songs anywhere music is sold, or if you're looking for Team Gina, CDs are available via the shop on this site.
