Service Description

Feminist Acting Class is a series of experiments to determine if the form and content of an acting class can both be made feminist. Adults of all ages and all levels of experience-- from professional working actors to lapsed actors to first timers-- are invited to join us for a weekend of monologues and scene study. All genders are welcome as we expand the possibilities for women, trans and nonbinary people in theatre, film and beyond. You might leave with greater knowledge of women/TGNC/queer playwrights, a monologue that broadens your range and type, or a paradigm shift about your career. ** Proof of Covid-19 vaccination and a negative rapid test (provided) will be required on the first day of class. Class size will be kept small and wearing masks when not performing is welcome. ** This weekend-long workshop meets: Friday January 20th from 7-9pm Saturday January 21st from 1pm-5pm Sunday January 22nd from 1pm-5pm For the full experience, please plan to attend all sessions. You may also want to block off some time before or after class to work on material. There are no refunds for missed sessions. Registration is $350 for new students and $275 for returning students. (Returning students email Gina for your discount.) There is an early registration price of $315 until November 28th-- save $35! We are also happy to offer a couple of scholarship or sliding scale spots each session, with priority going to BIPOC, disabled, and/or trans actors. If interested, please email with a few sentences about your interest in the class. ~ Created by award-winning playwright and director Gina Young, Feminist Acting Class has been presented at The Hammer Museum, The Feminist Center for Creative Work, Directors Lab West, The Association for Theatre in Higher Education Conference, The Women in Theatre Conference, and Grand Park’s Our LA Voices Festival, New York University, Chapman University, and Loyola Marymount University. “Young challenges the traditional, hierarchical structure of a learning environment, and challenges conventional notions of gender, drawing attention to the oppressive structures in place.” – Daisy Marsden, Bringing Sexy Back "Feminist Acting Class helped me to be braver in my work, grounded me in my voice, introduced me to crucial feminist theater in LA, and started friendships that are my everything." – Audrey Dundee Hannah, participant
